Before You Choose

Short, practical answers to the questions readers ask most often before buying a device from another Asian market.

01

Power and travel

Will a Japanese gadget work outside Japan?

USB-powered devices usually work anywhere. Mains appliances built for Japan's 100 V supply may need a step-down transformer in 220–240 V countries, and menus may be Japanese only.

Can I fly with a power bank bought in Asia?

Usually in cabin baggage only. Airlines commonly allow up to 100 Wh without approval and 100–160 Wh with approval. Some carriers ban in-flight use, so check your airline.

Do I need a voltage converter or just a plug adapter?

If the label says 100–240 V, a plug adapter is enough. If it lists a single voltage that differs from your mains supply, you need a correctly rated transformer or a different model.

02

Versions and software

Is a global version really different?

Often yes. It may differ in radio bands, language options, preinstalled services, app server region and warranty coverage.

Why does a companion app not appear in my app store?

Some apps are published only in certain regions or require a domestic account. Check app availability before buying any app-dependent device.

Will an imported phone work on my mobile network?

It depends on supported frequency bands and carrier certification. Compare the phone's band list with your carrier's bands, including 4G and 5G.

03

Safety and support

Will my warranty work if I buy abroad?

Many warranties are valid only in the country of purchase. Some brands offer international or regional warranties; confirm in writing before buying.

What do PSE, KC and CCC marks mean?

They are product safety or certification marks for Japan, South Korea and mainland China respectively. They show a product was certified for that market.

Are Shenzhen market gadgets genuine?

Huaqiangbei sells genuine products, components and imitations side by side. Buy branded items from official stores or authorised resellers.
